The East Kent Mavericks played their first game at their new home ground located at Simon Langton’s boy’s school on their 4G pitch. With both teams looking even it was expected to be an exciting first fixture at this location. The Mavericks defence dominated the first quarter allowing only one first down throughout. With the platform provided by the defence, the Mavericks offence opened the scoring as QB Luke Jones found receiver Owain Jenkins with a 20 yard pass before he beat a couple of defenders striding into the end-zone. The 1-point conversion was successful. The quarter ended 7-0 to the Mavericks.

After a steady start to the 2nd quarter an interception from the Bulls defence put them 1 yard out from the Mavericks end zone. With 4 downs to make a yard it look like the game would be tied up. However some impressive tackling followed by a force fumble into a turnover, prevented an almost certain touch down. This sparked the Mavericks offence into action as the powered down field with several catches from Rob McDonald. One of which was 65 yards and left the Mavericks just 5 yards short of the Bulls line.

This exciting 87-yard drive was finished when Luke Jones found receiver James Thompson from 5 yards out. The 1-point conversion was successful putting the Mavericks 14-0 up as the half came to a close.

The second half was one for the defences of both teams with a special mention to the Mavericks’ defensive line. Both defences halted the offences for the remainder of the game, ending with a solid 14-0 victory for the Mavericks. The Mavericks defence taking home a well-deserved shutout.

As the Mavericks defence continues to improve on what was already an impressive string of performances and the offense begins to start to find some good form. The Mavericks have a really chance to turn the season on its head over the coming weeks.
